Justice Ingles declines nomination for CJ

While it is almost every lawyer’s dream to hold the position as highest magistrate in the land, a Boholano associate justice in the Court of Appeals (CA) has declined his nomination on Monday.

CA Associate Justice Gabriel Ingles announced on Tuesday over dyRD’s “Inyong Alagad” he has officially turned down the nomination of lawyer Marcelo Bacalso to be included in the selection of the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Ingles told “Inyong Alagad” that his main reason is “delicadeza” as he openly expressed his views favoring the removal of then chief justice Renato Corona during his impeachment trial.

According to Ingles, there are “insiders” in the high tribunal and prominent figures in the legal profession who are more qualified for the position.

“Propriety dictates that I should decline the nomination, there is conflict of interest since I openly favored the removal of CJ Corona in several media interviews. My credibility is no longer beyond doubt, and the judicial institution would be prejudiced should I accept the nomination,” explained Ingles.

Even though he has turned down the nomination for chief justice, Ingles has not made a categorical statement whether he would also decline if nominated for associate justice in the high tribunal which comes next after CJ selection process is concluded.

Ingles sent a letter to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) JBC through its executive officer lawyer Annaliza S. Ty Capacite to turn down his nomination on Monday.

“I have read in a newspaper that I have been nominated by Atty. Marcelo Bacalso for the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. While I am flattered and thankful for the nomination, I am declining the same,” Ingles said.
