Associate
Justice Gabriel Ingles of the Court of Appeals said he objects to the idea of
allowing ousted chief justice Renato Corona to evade criminal liability.
Interviewed
over “Inyong Alagad” of Station dyRD on Monday, Ingles said that “if crime has
been committed by the former magistrate, no special treatment should be allowed
otherwise this would prejudice the common folk who also committed crimes but
are held fully accountable by our judicial system.
“This
is why our criminal justice system is weak, we are not giving equal in
treatment in prosecuting suspected criminals,” Ingles stressed.
Ingles,
a Boholano, announced on Monday that he has turned down his nomination for
chief justice citing his stance on the impeachment of then chief justice Renato
Corona.
Ingles
said the impeachment of Corona is only the first step. His removal from office
and perpetual disqualification to hold public office does not make him
answerable for his criminal acts.
